Terrible news for Belgian football: Michel Verschueren has died. He was 91 years old. Recently, he gave us a great interview. Under his reign, the Mauves had won eleven Belgian league titles, three cups and the UEFA Cup in 1983. A real Brussels monument therefore left on Wednesday.

The icon’s son, Michael Verschueren, confirmed the information for our colleagues from Belga. “My father died overnight in the Moutershof care center in Wolvertem where he was staying.”

During this interview released in our columns last Saturday, he told us that he was in the hospital because of a car accident. “I was not driving, he was a friend. He had to brake suddenly to avoid an accident. He succeeded, but my leg got hit in the car. The next day, the pain was too much strong. My doctor made me go to the hospital. I listened to him and I did well”he explained.

Doctors found a broken knee. “At the plateau below the knee. At the hospital in Jette, they decided not to operate on me. They put a splint on me, but I had to take it off because it was inflaming my skin. After two weeks in the hospital, I was transported here. I haven’t been able to start rehabilitation yet because I can’t put my foot down.”he added.
