Covid: the new sub-variant of Omicron BA.2.75.2 very worrying in view of its resistance to antibodies

This last variant, which is beginning to spread, escapes immunity more easily.

The virus, and in particular the Omicron variant, continues to mutate. Currently in France it is the BA.5 sub-variant which dominates.

But as the sequencing of the virus genome makes it possible to identify new variants and new sub-variants, some attract more attention from researchers.

And in particular the sub-variant of Omicron, BA.2.75 identified in India which has also mutated to give BA.2.75.2. Certainly with the scientific codes it is a little difficult to navigate.

This last sub-variant which particularly worries researchers has been spotted in indiabut it also spread to RUK, Spain, Germany, USA and Australia. So it is certain that it will be detected in France shortly.

An evolution of the virus which makes it very resistant

While some announce the end of the pandemic or at least the beginning of the end, this variant of Omicron BA.2.75.2 has something to worry about because it has the ability to resist the neutralizing action of antibodies.

So he escape immunityas reported in results published Sept. 16 in the journal Biology bioRxiv. Research conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden shows that this BA.2.75.2 represents “the strongest variant characterized to date”.

If this variant escapes the neutralizing capacity of the antibodies, this means that it more easily escapes the immunity currently present in the population. And therefore contamination.

Insufficient protection…

Another study conducted on this variant by Beijing researchers and published concomitantly confirms the first results and states that this variant could escape natural immunity such as that of vaccines which use BA.5 in its serum.

The protection might not be enough.

Which does not necessarily mean that this sub-variant could completely escape immunity either, and that the latter acquired naturally by infection with Covid or by recall of vaccines could be sufficient to avoid deaths.

Let’s hope all the same that this last variant does not become dominant…
