From Classics team to Grand Tours team: has Quick-Step started its reconversion with Evenepoel?

To build a collective around Evenepoel, Patrick Lefevere seems to have the firm intention of it in view of the results. However, it must come up against the reality on the ground.

“I want to continue to strengthen the team with this desire to support Remco a little more”, the boss of the Quick-Step-Alpha Vinyl team told us last week.

“Unfortunately, here I only had five contracts that became available and I didn’t have a lot of choice. But I’m sure that other riders in the team can also assist him in the mountains. But that’s clear that for 2024 and 2025, we will have to find reinforcements. Unlike other teams who have no budget, who never see the end of the fund and can spend without counting, I have to count my money “he admitted.

Quick-Step has only formalized three transfers for the 2023 season. Tim Merlier for sprints, Casper Pedersen for one-day races and Jan Hirt for the mountain. The Czech, 6th in the last Giro, will probably be the only reinforcement for Evenepoel next year. It will be added to Ilan Van Wilder, Fausto Masnada, Mauri Vansevenant, Pieter Serry, Mattia Cattaneo and Louis Vervaeke who are currently the best climbers available to the wolf pack.
