Three days after the Europa League victory over Union Berlin, Union Saint-Gilloise was defeated by Genk on Sunday (1-2). Led quickly, the Saint-Gillois returned to courage before finally cracking in stoppage time.
The match started in a balanced way between the two teams but Genk opened the scoring in the 15th minute on their first real chance. Well isolated on the left side, Paintsil cleverly deceived Moris. The Unionists were trying to get back to the front but struggled to create big chances in the first half, the Limburgers proving dangerous on the counter-attack.
Upon returning from the locker room, the Unionists undoubtedly paid for their efforts on Thursday and the meeting lost in intensity. But that was without counting on the unsuspected resources of the people of Brussels. In the 60th, Vanzeir went alone on goal but was too late before hitting. A few minutes later, the Unionists thought they had equalized on a big error from Vandevoordt but the ball had gone out beforehand. A quarter of the term, Loïc Lapoussin deservedly equalized with a magnificent unstoppable strike for the Limburg goalkeeper.
But as we headed for a split, Samatta gave Genkois the victory in stoppage time on a corner kick.
A blow for the Union Saint-Gilloise which could not chain a third victory this week. In the standings, the Unionists remain in 5th place while Genk remains in the wake of Antwerp.
