Nico Rosberg brought down Ferrari in flames following yet another strategic error by the Scuderia during the Dutch Grand Prix. The team was not ready with all the tires when Carlos Sainz arrived for his first pit stop on lap 12 at Zandvoort. The Spaniard was immobilized for no less than 12 seconds, which probably cost him a place on the podium.
Rosberg said Formula 2 and Formula 3 teams are doing a better job than the Reds at pit stops and strategizing. The German has also called on team principal Mattia Binotto to make urgent changes to his team’s organization chart.
“Mattia Binotto keeps saying: ‘no, no, we don’t need to make any changes, everything is fine’, Rosberg told Sky Sports F1. “When will they finally open their eyes? It’s not possible anymore. Even the Formula 2 or Formula 3 teams do a better job in their strategy and their pit stops than Ferrari!”
“You’re in the pits and there are only three out of four tires ready as the race is in full swing. At some point they really have to think about making changes within the team.”
“One of the criticisms that people often say is that Binotto is an engineer, not a leader. So sometimes you need a two-headed management, with a technical director and a team principal in charge. to manage troops and commercial affairs”, Rosberg insists.
When asked about Rosberg’s comments, Binotto said: “We won’t change people, that’s a direct response to Rosberg. What’s more important is stability and making sure you improve race by race. We have a great team, I’m sure “
“Carlos’ pit call came too late so we didn’t have time to react. I’m pretty sure we can improve in the future. I’m less concerned about that than the performance of our car”, concludes Binotto.
It’s up to Ferrari to respond as it should to Rosberg’s remonstrances and deliver a faultless performance for the big meeting at Monza this weekend.
