“Start Doohan for 2023!”

Jacques Villeneuve believes that Alpine should give a chance to Jack Doohan, member of the academy of the French team, rather than to Pierre Gasly or Mick Schumacher.

After the announcement of Fernando Alonso’s departure for Aston Martin, Otmar Szafnauer has drawn up a list of 14 drivers to replace the Spaniard in 2023. Among them is the son of Mick Doohan who does more than defend himself in Formula 2.

The young Australian would be the ideal recruit to support Esteban Ocon next year according to Villeneuve. The 1997 world champion thinks Alpine should not make the same mistake as with Oscar Piastri and start Doohan directly.

“Why not give Doohan a chance?”asks the Canadian. Instead of spending a year preparing him like they did with Piastri, Alpine should throw him straight into the deep end and see how he does.”

“Doohan has a good background in motorsports. Like Carlos Sainz Jr before him, he has been immersed in it since early childhood thanks to his father and can benefit from his advice. He really has the right mindset to be at the highest level and not crack under pressure.”

Alpine boss Laurent Rossi has confirmed that Doohan is indeed on the Enstone-based team’s shortlist for the coming seasons.

“We believe in him, he has shown a lot of potential, especially lately. He is in the right place at the right time”adds the Frenchman.

“He’s a great person, he’s fast, his father is also a champion that I admire and a person that I look up to. They are exceptional guys. Jack is in our plans”

“One way or another we will try to put it in one of our cars at some point”concludes Rossi.
