Van Vleuten’s tire explodes, she falls hard and fractures her elbow on the mixed relay of the Worlds

Annemiek van Vleuten suffered a heavy fall after a few tens of meters during the mixed time trial relay at the World Cycling Championships in Wollongong.

While the male torchbearers (left first) had been slowed down by a mechanical problem Bauke Mollemathe Dutch riders wanted to go full throttle to catch up.

A pursuit that was stopped dead after a few meters. van Vleuten lost his balance and suddenly skidded to hit the sidewalk and hit the ground violently. Visibly shocked by this completely unexpected fall, the Dutch did not leave.

“My front tire exploded and I crashed”van Vleuten explained on Twitter after the race.

Annemiek van Vleuten suffered a broken elbow following this fall. The Dutch cycling federation announced this after the Dutchwoman passed tests in hospital.

Annemiek van Vleuten, 39, however, remains in the selection for Saturday’s road race for the time being. A decision on this will be made later in the week.

Dutch coach Loes Gunnewijk will consult with Annemiek Van Vleuten and the medical staff in the coming days. “Annemiek can ride a bike with this stable fracture, but the question is obviously how much pain will be“, says Loes Gunnewijk.”We will see that in the next few days. We hope that Annemiek can take the start, but she will have to be responsible.

Dominant of the season with her successes on the Giro, the Tour de France and the Vuelta or even in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, van Vleuten is obviously a candidate for victory in the road race. An event she has already won in 2019.
