Wollongong Worlds: Remco Evenepoel is resting, “five minutes before the press conference, I was still asleep!”

Unsurprisingly, the team’s roller Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl is among the favorites on the podium, alongside the Filippo Gana, Tadej Pogacar, Stefan Bissegger or Stefan Kung. “It’s normal that I’m among the favourites, because my time in the Vuelta was very, very good. For me, personally, it was the best ever, especially on the flat. If I can find the same legs, then I can fight well with Filippo Ganna and the others. But first, you have to have the legs. Confidence in the turns and the bumps, all that will also play a part. The head will do everything and for the moment, I I have a fairly strong head and it is going well because I have just won a very good race”confides Evenepoel who does not come saying ‘we’ll see’, he has ambition. “Yes, I’m coming with ambition. If I said that I’m coming for a top 5, that would be a bit of a lie. In a championship, you always have to aim for the podium, especially for me in a time trial. Afterwards, if several guys are better than you, there’s nothing to do”.

“I like this course, it suits me well, provided that the legs are there. The start is very difficult, it goes up. There is enough to hurt the legs. Then there will be the bump, followed by a descent and a last flat and technical part, but nothing crazy. There are quite a few meters of elevation gain”.

After his first outing in the Wollongong suburb, we asked Remco Evenepoel what he thought of the area. “To be honest, it’s not the best place to cycle! It’s almost always the same roads, big roads, with a lot of traffic and trucks passing us at 100 km/h. Afterwards, the along the sea, it’s sure that the scenery is very beautiful. It’s a beautiful region for nature but for cycling, it’s not beautiful!”.
